One of my favorite themes to read is what I call Geek Chic Lit, which features academics and university workers. In The Theory (of) attraction it introduces us to a group of astrophysics and a sociologist. Cami lives in a group of flats down the road from the university and is surrounded by others in the Sciences fields. One is her next-door neighbor Ivan. As I was reading this book, all I could visualize was that Ivan's character was so much like Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory, but since this book was written before the popular TV show, it did make references to the 80's character Urkel. To me though as I am a major fan of Big Bang Theory, I thought of Ivan as a sexier version of Sheldon. Imagine if you had Sheldon's brain in someone like Channing Tatum. The only difference though is that this book starts off with Cami trying to teach Ivan how to talk to donors and teaching him social skills. One thing leads to another, and the pair has this sizzling chemistry, and Ivan is about to introduce and teach Cami to a whole new side of him, she never knew existed - Ivan is into the BDSM world and is known as a Dominant/ Domme and Cami is about to become his Sub. The Theory of Attraction by Delphine Dryden was a fun, steamy geek read. Think The Big Bang Theory meets Fifty Shades of Grey and you have The Theory of Attraction, though of course her book was released before both series. I am now looking forward to reading the remainder of the series.Product details

The Theory of Attraction The Science of Temptation Book 1 edition by Delphine Dryden Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
One term that comes up in connection with Delphine Dryden is “nerd romance” or “nerd kink,” and you better believe that both are present in this first book of the series. Set in Houston, Texas, the characters in this 120-ish page novella are very real and…a little bit on the nerdy side.
Camilla is the somewhat more down to earth and less obsessive compulsive neighbor to the hunky rocket scientist Ivan. When Ivan comes to her after two years of acquaintance-friendship and asks her to groom him for an upcoming social event at the college where he works, things start to heat up between the two neighbors. Ivan and Camilla start to see each other in a much different light, and the revelations that Camilla experiences about Ivan are a huge surprise. The peeling back of Ivan’s character is a revelation to the reader, too, and an introduction for both Camilla and reader into the world of bondage, discipline/dominance, submission/sadism and masochism (BDSM).
As an introduction to BDSM romance, it does not come more clean and sweet than this type of work. The relationship between the two main characters has a few rough spots, and I can honestly say that I am not sure if I could have reacted the way that either of the characters did, but I did enjoy reading and watching the evolution of the relationship. Delphine was able to capture that moment when two people come together in a smash of lust and anticipation while highlighting the finer aspects of nerd personality/socialization issues. The sex was steamy and well written, and the story was started and finished within a few hours. I feel that fans of BDSM, or people who are kind of on the fence about BDSM, fans of nerd love, and contemporary romance fans would enjoy this book.
I am not surprised that Delphine Dryden has contributed a section titled “So You Think You Can Kink” which deals with writing BDSM to the How to Write Hot Sex compilation created by many steamy romance authors. She really is just that good. What does surprise me is that she has a steampunk collection, which is a genre that I do not think sees as many published novels in comparison with the other romance subgenres. I will definitely be looking into more works by this author.

Honest to goodness, I have NO idea why this book only has 4 stars and so little 5 star reviews. I am considered a hard person to please when it comes to books. I'm picky, so, so picky. I read numerous books a week, basically if I am not taking care of my children there is a book in front of my face. That being said, wow. It's sooo very rare when a book is predominately smutty that I actually enjoy the "story" that goes with it. This book has. it. all. Great smut, great characters, and a story line I can both follow and believe. I can't wait to read more from this author!
My main problem with The Theory of Attraction was that it wasn't what I was expecting and what first 35% of the book lead me on to expect – cute chick lit novel about girl falling for the geeky scientist and getting him to notice her.
As I said, the first half of the book was exactly that. It was light, funny and romantic. Camilla comments about Ivan and geeks in general had me giggling and highlighting all of the time
“Two arguing geeks were stoppable. Three arguing geeks created an infinite argument vortex of doom that sucked time down like a black hole.”
Additional reason for me to fall in love with The Theory of Attraction was Camilla’s best friend Athena. She reminded me a lot of Samantha from Sex and the City. I always love to read about strong female friendships, especially when a friend is blunt and sexually more opened than the main character. You gotta love the reactions to those outstandish advices!
But then at about 40% into the book The Theory of Attraction turns into erotica novel. The romance and funny moments disappear and instead we get a lot of sex. It was not repetitive since they explore Camilla’s submissive side with spanking, tying up, etc, but still it was boring. I found myself skimming through explicit descriptions and wishing for the magic of the first half of the book to come back.
I hope that Delphine Dryden will write pure chick lit/contemporary romance novel in the future. I will be definitely very interested to read it!
IN THE END...
So to whom to recommend this book? Fans of bdsm erotica will be bored with a slow start and chick lit romance novels lovers will be shocked with the explicit sexual marathon aka. second half of the book. But if you like both these genres and are aware what are you getting into, you might enjoy The Theory of Attraction.
